SIM swappers arrested for stealing cryptocurrency

Europol have arrested 10 hackers for stealing $100M worth of cryptocurrency.

Ten people have been arrested in connection with a series of SIM-swapping attacks which allowed the attackers to steal more than $100M by gaining access to the mobile phone numbers of celebrities in America.

SIM swapping refers to an attack whereby hackers persuade phone companies to transfer their victims’ mobile phone service to a SIM card they control. This is typically achieved by social engineering rather than a technical hack.

This comes almost a year after Europol dismantled two SIM swapping rings that stole €3.5 million ($3.9 million) through a wave of more than 100 attacks on victims in Austria, accessing their bank accounts through their phone numbers.
